St. Margaret of Scotland

St. Margaret of Scotland has a strong presence in the Shaw neighborhood.  Many residents have attended this church all their lives.  Cbabi has lived with his family in Shaw for twelve years.  He and his wife own SweetArt Bakeshop and Art Studio.  They enjoy the social diversity and the proximity of Tower Grove Park, the Botanical Garden, and their childrens' school.

Standard Chicken

Star Tobacco

 

The Star Tobacco building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Burke discussed the unique features of the industrial building. Patrick has lived in Botanical Heights since 1979.

Stone House

Stores on MLK

Like many buildings in the neighbrohood, SweetArt Bakery contains many stories associated with its past occupants.  Its previous uses included a flower shop, a confectionary, a German bakery. SweetArt is a vegan bake shop and wonderful place to go on rainy day and read a book or go online.  Tami has lived in the neighborhood since 2006 and recently purchased a home.  She prefers the neighborhood due to its social diversity.

Synogogue

This synagogue has been repurposed as a church. Although the synagogue is not very old, Arun likes seeing buildings being reused instead of destroyed. Arun has lived in the Botanical Heights neighborhood for only a few months of 2015.

Taxes and Complications

 

John W. claims that the Walnut Park East neighborhood receives “2%” of total tax revenue in St. Louis City. He explains the complications of property ownership and maintenance in the neighborhood.

Tear Down House on Oriole Ave.

 

 

 

Annie stated that the house across the street be torn down since the roof is caved in.

 

Annie was raised in the Walnut Park East neighborhood, moved away for 30 years, then returned to the neighborhood to care for her ailing parents.

Terry & Burd

In this interesting interview, the resident describes how the community once was full, both in terms of houses on lots and families in houses. Moreover, she describes a corner restaurant at Terry and Burd owned by a Miss Olivia, who babysat the resident and her younger brother as children. Later on this building became occupied by Joe who sold fresh fruit and vegatibles out the back onto Terry. Recorded on July 25th 2016

Terry Avenue

Terry Avenue Tree

The Castle

Tony S. describes positive accepts of the Walnut Park East community. Other than an incident at his shop during the Ferguson protests, his business has not experienced any trouble. Tony also provides an analysis of the dynamics of the Walnut Park East neighborhood.

 

Tony S. is the owner of The Kutt Factory Barbershop at 5768 W. Florissant Ave. He has maintained the shop for four years.

The Messiah's Tabernacle

 

In this video, Ms. Essie talks about the past and present pastors of The Messiah’s Tabernacle Church on Emerson Ave.

Essie L. and her family were one of the first Black families to move on Beacon Ave. She has lived in Walnut Park East for 45 years, and serves as captain of her block.

The Neighborhood

Sylvester discusses the neighborhood, his history in the neighborhood and the changes it has experienced over the years. Sylvester M moved to Wells Goodfellow with his family at the age of seven in 1965.  In 2000, he moved back to the neighborhood and he now lives in the same house that he grew up in.  In the short above he describes the changes in terms of the patterns of vacancy, disrepair and unkempt yards. He feels this is something which needs to be changed, to maintain what character the neighborhood has left to retain.  Recorded on July 13th 2016

The New Neighborhood Eats

 

In this video, Roy describes the barbershop and recently-opened Good Eats Restaurant at Mimika and Lilian as places of history and hope, and the owner of these two establishments as a pillar to the neighborhood.

A childhood resident of Walnut Park, Roy is the son of the founder of Roy’s Transmission, Roy DeBoise, and brother to current owner of the shop, Akeens.

The Park

 

In this video, Mr. Goss describes the change and benefits of Turner Park. To Mr. Goss, the park has experienced renovation that has made it more friendly for use, and that the park is a place where people can cool off in hot weather.
