Helper's of the Holy Soul Order

 

In this video, Barbara recalls her experiences with the nuns of the Helper’s of the Holy Souls Order on Washington Ave. Nuns of the order provided invaluable services to the neighborhood.

Essie L. and her family were one of the first Black families to move on Beacon Ave. She has lived in Walnut Park East for 45 years, and serves as captain of her block.

History of CCCC & C Inc.

 

In this video, Mr. Morehouse describes the beginnings of CCCC & C Inc. in Walnut Park, and the history of the company.

Mr. Morehouse and his family moved to the Walnut Park neighborhood in 1969. He is co-owner of CCCC & C Security in Walnut Park.

In this video, Mr. Roach talks about the condition of Walnut Park when he moved into the neighborhood in 1967, and the current condition of the neighborhood. He also talks about he and his neighbors’ efforts to maintain their houses and alleys, and the city’s slip in services in Walnut Park.

William Roach has been a resident of the Walnut Park neighborhood for over 50 years. He sits on the Safety Committee for the 22nd Ward, is the Treasurer of the Baden Business District, and the captain of his block of Arlington Ave.

Holy Cross Community Garden

Sister Welker talks briefly on the communty garden on Church street. She appreciates the assistance from the Botanical Garden and the social benefits she feels the garden offers the neighborhood, as a gathering ground. She hopes that the garden can flourish and as residents move on, new residents will take a role in keeping the community garden going.

Holy Temple COGIC

Pendleton Avenue at the intersection of Delmar was known as "the stroll" because of the prostitutes that worked there.  Ms. Green recalls how her mother became part of that world and how she then got saved by the Holy Temple COGIC church.  Melissa Green lives in the Ville neighborhood and maintains strong ties to the neighborhood where she grew up around Delmar and Pendelton.  October 2018.

Horseshoe

The Horseshoe was once known as "Drug City" due to the nature of the illegal activity that took place there.  All the homes were torn down as part of the effort to improve the area's drainage.  Anthony S. is a long-time resident of Wells Goodfellow. Recorded on August 16th 2016

Horseshoe Area

The Horseshoe area was once plagued with drugs and abandoned homes.  Now it has a new church.  Valerie believes a park and new homes would mark an improvement for that area.  Valerie moved to Wells Goodfellow with her parents in the 1960s.  Later in life she moved back to the neighborhood. Recorded on June 6th, 2016

Hospital at Taylor/West Belle

 

In this video, Mr. Robinson describes how the neighborhood has changed by recalling the change of buildings and their purposes at 915 North Taylor.  It was originally a hospital and then it became a JobCorps center.  When the Job Corps didn't work out, the property became an eyesore. In the 1970s, they tore it down and eventually built a new church on the property.

George Robinson was raised in the Vandeventer neighborhood.

Due to safety concerns, Paul B and his daughter stay inside the house or on the porch on hot days.  Paul B moved to Wells Goodfellow from Chicago in 2008 and enjoys the tranquility of the neighborhood.  September 2016.

Pastor Dr. Irving reflected on the Walnut Park East of his youth. He, his parents, and eight siblings moved to a home at Arlington and Harney Aves. He recalled that he attended Walbridge and Northwest Schools - both walking distance from his home. He reflected on the “greenery” around the neighborhood, and the respect given to the elders of Walnut Park East.

Pastor Dr. Irving, his parents, six sisters, and three brothers moved to Walnut Park in 1968. Pastor Irving leads the congregation at the Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church on Gilmore Ave.

House on Burd Avenue

In this interview the resident discusses her home as a place where she goes to stay cool during hot weather, though she laments the absence of a community center which might serve the same purpose for greater numbers of people. She moved to the house when was 8 years old, by a single parent of four children. She describes her neighbors intially as white when the family moved into the area in the 1950s.  Recorded on July 25th 2016

House On Life Support

Willie Mae Hibler tells the tragic story of houses on her block that deteriorate slowly, like a dying person.  She also tells the story of a woman who attempted to fix up a house but was not able to secure legal title to the property.  Originally from Mississisippi, Miss Hibler has lived in the neighborhood for many decades.

Housing problem & What to do about it

Vincent Nyman is outspoken in his belief that the boarded up houses and vacants in the neighborhood are a demoralizing aspect for the nearby residents. He believes this is a social justice issue which must be addressed, or even acknowledged by those in the media and in politics. He thinks St. Louis has a defeatist or complacent attitude towards housing. However, he feels the new revitalization organization will make it a point to address this issue facing Baden.

How to Improve Baden

A band-aid cannot fix the complexities of the systemic crime issues hurting the neighborhood, argues Vincent Nyman. He hopes going forward community events which offer community building, family building, and relationship building can take place. He feels segregation is a harmful continuity in the neighborhood.

I-44 Barriers

The Thurman underpass barriers has created a pedestrian throughway that connects Shaw and Botanical Heights.  It encourages bike and pedestrian acces between the two neighborhoods.  Robert moved to Shaw in 2014 with his family to be near the City Garden School that his son attends.

Ice's

Madeline lived in an apartment above Ice’s when she first moved to St. Louis in 1986. She says the building is still important to her because of her past, but it’s also important to the community because of its beautiful architecture and because of the businesses that have operated on the ground floor. Madeline has lived in Shaw since 2001.

Ices

Although Ice’s is relatively new, it is a great place to go to cool off on a hot day. It is also a good place for the community to gather. Sean explains that his family has always run into other people they know at Ice’s, and it provides them with a chance to catch up with old friends.  Sean moved to the Shaw neighborhood in 1991, and loves the community and the environment around it.

Infill Housing on Juniata

In this clip Brenda expresses dissatisfaction with the construction of vinyl sided houses, or infill housing, which she believes disrupts the character of the neighborhood. She feels that young people relocating into neighborhoods such as Tower Grove South, from the county, come to live in an area where the architecture reflects that of age, or a vintage quality. The new infill homes she states, are unwelcome newcomers.

International Garden

 

This garden is run by the International Institute. Many of its participants are from other countries, and this garden provides an area for them to learn and become self-sufficient. Aberha moved to Botanical Heights in the 1980s due to the affordable housing and the proximity to both his workplace and his siblings.

International Garden

 

Cheryl believes this garden promotes community while benefitting the environment. This garden partners with the International Institute. Cheryl hopes the garden is improving soil in this area, since it is next to a factory and the lot used to host a gas station. Cheryl has lived in Botanical Heights since 2006 and has enjoyed the opportunity to take part in revitalizing the neighborhood.
