Dragons Grove

Dragons Grove is a community garden at the St. Margaret of Scotland school, where children and adults work and learn together. Jacque believes the garden is beneficial for the neighborhood. Jacque has lived in Shaw since 1996, and is the pastor at Compton Heights Christian Church. She believes it is important for her to live in the community and be a part of it. She loves the diversity of people in the community.

Dream Center

 

Vanessa described the resources provided by The Dream Center. She also described the number of homeless and drug addicts who live in the Greater Ville neighborhood.

 

Vanessa was born and raised in the Greater Ville. She can be found sitting on the stoop of her family home.

Drug House

Empty Lot

Alexander would like to see the empty lots in Botanical Heights eliminated. In their place, the city could provide recreational centers for the children in the area to entertain them and help them relax after school.

Empty Lot

Sylvester describes an empty lot adjacent to his home in the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood, a plot of land given to him by the city of St. Louis in return for maintaining the lot. At one time a home stood on the lot, however now it sits empty. Sylvester expressed interest in perhaps one day putting a picnic table and umbrella on the land so he can enjoy it in the hot weather.  Sylvester M moved to Wells Goodfellow with his family at the age of seven in 1965.  In 2000, he moved back to the neighborhood and he now lives in the same house that he grew up in.   Recorded on July 13th 2016

Empty Lots

Empty Lots

Edna S. sees the neighborhood's many empty lots as an improvement over the abandoned buildings that once existed but she would like to see new housing built on them.  Edna S grew up in Wells Goodfellow and has lived at several addresses in the neighborhood.  Most of her family still lives nearby. Recorded on July 30th 2016

Enright Ave.

 

In this video, Judith describes past and present residents of Enright Ave. between Vandeventer and Taylor Aves. She believes the history of the block should be preserved because of the great number of African-American “leaders” who lived on the street.

Judith Arnold is a long-time resident of the Vandeventer neighborhood. She is also an active member of the community.

Enright Community Garden

 

In this video, Mr. Winsor describes Enright Community Garden. He thinks that the garden promotes community. He noted that it was begun by a person who lives on Enright.  It's a nice place to relax or read a book in the summertime.

Mr. Winsor has lived in the Vandeventer neighborhood since the 1980s.

Factory Eyesore

Joyce P would like to see the empty factory buildng on Hamilton converted to a more productive use or torn down for redevelopment.  She discusses the benefits of a having a wind farm on the property.  Joyce P is a pre-school teacher who has lived in the neighborhood since the 1990s. Recorded on August 20th 2016

Factory Rehab

The factory here used to be a dilapidated building, but has recently been restored. Brittany just recently moved to the St. Louis area.

Fence

Alexander wants to see the fences that are blocking off the streets removed. They cut off areas of the community and make it hard for people to interact.

Fence

The fence here separates the new neighborhood from the old neighborhood. It represents a divide in the community. Cheryl remains hopeful that community will continue to grow together despite the fence. Cheryl has lived in Botanical Heights since 2006 and has enjoyed the opportunity to take part in revitalizing the neighborhood.

Fire Hydrant

Sometimes fire hydrants are opened for kids to cool down in the summer. There are few places in the neighborhood where children can go to stay cool on hot days.

Fire Hydrant

Due to a lack of youth facilities, kids in the neighborhoods keep cool in the hot weather by playing in water spewed by fire hydrants.  D'vion Harris chose Wells Goodfellow as the neighborhood in which to buy his first house.  Although the house was purchased in 2016, he has spent a great deal of time in the neighborhood since 2001.  He is the landscaper for the Fresh Coast Tree Farm. Recorded on July 22, 2016

Firefighters Institute for Racial Equality

 

In this video, Mr. Willis talks about the F.I.R.E., or .Firefighters Institute for Racial Equality, organization, a union for African-American firefighters, and the building the organization owns in Lewis Place. Mr. Willis has lived on Lewis Place since 1990 and is president of the Lewis Place Improvement Association.

Firehouse

Firehouse in Hot Weather

 

In this video, Captain Daniels recalls the days when children in the Walnut Park East neighborhood visited the firehouse on hot days.

Captain Duane Daniels began his career with the St. Louis Fire Department in 1988. He has served at Engine  House #27 in the Walnut Park East neighborhood since 1997. Captain Daniels also attended Northwest High School, graduating with the Class of 1979.

First Black Families in Walnut Park Neighborhood

 

In this video, Mr. Morehouse talks about the first Black family to move into Walnut Park on North Pointe Avenue.  He also describes a violent incident in the neighborhood in 1975 where two of his friends were shot and injured. 2017.

Mr. Morehouse and his family moved to the Walnut Park neighborhood in 1969. He is co-owner of CCCC & C Security Inc. in Walnut Park.

Fish Stores

Flora Place

Flora Place Park provides a place for residents to walk along and view the beautiful old homes and trees in the neighborhood and to interact with neighbors. Sean moved to the Shaw neighborhood in 1991, and loves the community and the environment around it.

Folsom Ave Apartments

These buildings were built in the 1930s. Aberha wants to preserve them for future generations. Aberha moved to Botanical Heights in the 1980s due to the affordable housing and the proximity to both his workplace and his siblings.

Former Bars

This open area used to contain several bars, but they left when the community began going downhill. William, a resident of Botanical Heights, has lived in south St. Louis for most of his life.

Four Family Flat

The four-family flat on Delmar Bouleveard was one of the many properties owned by the Holy Temple COGIC church.  Ms. Greene remembers tenants who were assisted by the church.  Melissa Greene lives in the Ville neighborhood and maintains strong ties to the neighborhood where she grew up around Delmar and Pendelton.  October 2018.
