2 Lewis Place

 

In this video, Mr. Willis talks about the history of his house in Lewis Place, and its historical significance with regard to restrictive housing covenants. Mr. Willis has lived on Lewis Place since 1990 and is president of the Lewis Place Improvement Association.

39th Folsom

Aberha cites youth activity as a problem in this area.  Surveillance cameras might help improve the situation.  Aberha moved to Botanical Heights in the 1980s due to the affordable housing and the proximity to both his workplace and his siblings.

39th McRee

There were two murders at the tavern that used to occupy the intersection of 39th Street and McRee.  Now the neighborhood looks beautiful.  William, a resident of Botanical Heights, has lived in south St. Louis for most of his life.

Annie described when she and her family moved to the Walnut Park East neighborhood and the number of years her parents stayed in their home.

A Happening Place

Abandoned Apartments

Abandoned Building

 Cheryl discusses the abandoned multi-family dwellings as a place to be eliminated or to be reconstructed as affordable housing units, but she says development has been slow. Cheryl has lived in Botanical Heights since 2006, and she has enjoyed the opportunity to take part in revitalizing the neighborhood.

Abandoned Home

This abandoned home is described as a place to eliminate. She explains that the building is collapsing, leaving bricks and other materials scattered around. This presents a danger to the children who frequently play in the alleyway beside it. Bertha has lived in Botanical Heights since about 2014, and enjoys the quiet neighborhood.

Abandoned House at 5583 Genevieve Ave.

 

Warning: Expletives are used in this video.

Lex Smith and friends suggests that the city tear down the house at 5583 Genevieve Ave., and put a stop sign at the intersection of Genevieve and Harney Aves. They state that there is little visibility at the intersection, and that two deaf children have been hit by cars at Genevieve and Harney Aves.

Lex Smith and friends live three houses down from the intersection of Genevieve and Harney Aves. Their house is a neighborhood gathering place.

Abandoned Lot

An abandoned lot next door to Frank Smith's house attracts rodents and possums. He believes it should be demolished.

Abandoned Storefronts

Abner Place

The alley north of Utah was replaced with a paving system that reduces rain water runoff.

Alley Prairie Planting

 This prairie garden is discussed as an environmentally beneficial place. Even though it's small, it attracts butterflies and other wildlife while promoting green space in the area. Emily moved to the Shaw neighborhood in 2000. She enjoys several things about the area, such as the proximity to Tower Grove Park, the unique houses, the South Grand district; mostly, however, she likes her neighbors and the sense of community.

Alleyways

Ashland Detention Basin

Don expresses healthy skepticism that MSD is maintaining the Ashland Avenue storm water retention basin adeqautely, and questions how well the basin actually assists in draining water. He also wonders if these basins, which could grow in number in the future, will remain fenced off and whether that is the best policy for the neighborhood. Don D is active in local politics and is especially interested in redevelopment of the Wellston Loop area. Recorded on June 13th, 2016

Ashland Flooding

Ashland Avenue has had longstanding problems associated with storm overlflows.  Many residents were unaware that a Creek once ran along its path and did not know that its low elevation was one reason for flash floods.  Edna S grew up in Wells Goodfellow and has lived at several addresses in the neighborhood.  Most of her family still lives nearby. Recorded on July 30th 2016

Ashland Retention Basin

The MSD retention basins along Ashland Avenue are unattractive although they serve a useful purpose in collecting excess stormwater. Douglas H has lived in Wells Goodfellow since the early 1960s, when he moved from Mississippi with his family. Recorded on July 23, 2016

On hot days, Essie spends early mornings and evenings in her backyard tending to her flowers.  

Essie L. and her family were one of the first Black families to move on Beacon Ave. She has lived in Walnut Park East for 45 years, and serves as captain of her block.

Bad Hotel

In this video, Mr. Westbrook describes how a  property on Washington Ave. was ulitized in the 1970's. For Mr. Westbrook, a change in the way in which the property is used shows how the neighborhood has changed for the better.
